What the grades and categories in BS 5839-6 mean, and how to choose the right system for a dwelling.

What BS 5839-6 covers

BS 5839-6 is the British Standard for fire detection and fire alarm systems in domestic premises. It sets out grades, which describe the type of system, and categories, which describe the level of protection.

Understanding grades

Grades range from systems built around mains powered detectors with backup, through to more comprehensive control and indicating equipment. The grade you need depends on the type and risk profile of the dwelling.

Understanding categories

Categories describe how much of the property is protected and whether detection is aimed at protecting escape routes, the whole dwelling or specific rooms.

Choosing the right system

The correct grade and category come from a risk assessment of the dwelling. Our specification support team can help you select a compliant system.
